Purchasing a Quilt
Historic Village Quilts Wants you to Consider 10 Important Questions Before you Purchase an Heirloom Quilt
Why are These Quilts More Expensive than Imitations or Imports?
We feature heirloom quilts that last for generations. The quality of labor and materials is superior. Our quilts are made with precession piecing and superior cotton, thread and batting.
What should you look for in the choice of a quilt?
It should be well constructed, lying flat with no puckers, and all appliqué should be well stitched. Durable binding should show on both the front and back. The color and pattern should appeal to you personally.
What is the difference between a pieced and an appliqué quilt?
Style! A pieced quilt is made of small geometric pieces that are sewn together to create a pattern. An appliqué quilt has numerous hand-cut pieces arranged on a background and then stitched on to form the “picture” block.
Why is an appliqué quilt more expensive?
The many hours needed to produce very fine handwork raise the cost. It takes twice as many hours to do this as any piece work.
What’s the latest on Quilting Stitches?
Whether done by hand or guided machine look for uniformity in stitch length. The stitches that hold the layers together are what will keep the quilt together for generations. Thus, consistent rather than tiny stitches will add quality and dimension to your quilt.
Is there a difference between a quilt made by a group or just one quilter?
Yes, but this is definitely a personal choice. The quilting bee is a very old tradition. Some just love the variations of stitching on a quilt done by several hands. If you prefer uniformity in appearance, Historic Village Quilts offers the hand work of a single quilter. Both can be lovely.
Can a Historic Village Quilt be safely used every day?
Yes, and they can also be greatly loved and admired over the years. They must be kept out of direct sunlight. If washing is necessary, a gentle soap such as Ivory (not dish soap) should be used to soak the quilt and then rinsed and spun out in the machine. A dryer should not be used to tumble the quilt. Remove the quilt and then lie it flat to dry.
Should I or shouldn’t I invest in a quilt?
The cost of the heirloom quilt depends upon the number of hours spent making it. Since all our quilts are made here on site by me, you will be greatly satisfied by the workmanship, quality, and beauty of a commissioned quilt. Washing all fabric, cutting, piecing is preparation for hand or machine finishes. Binding and label complete the quilt. Thus, love and tradition go into a quilt that will last for generations.
Does Historic Village Quilts offer custom services?
Absolutely! The quilt can be designed for desired size and color. Fabrics can be chosen with Christine’s help. Price will vary with size and complexity. See our commissions page for more info.
